Rose Gardening

Growing roses in Calgary is rewarding. Many people mistakenly believe that Calgary’s challenging growing conditions rule out the possibility of growing a wide variety of roses.
Tips to Start You on Your Way
  • Roses require at least 6 hours of sun per day.
  • Roses require acidic soil with lots of organic
    matter to thrive.
  • Roses need to be planted at least 30 cm deep.
  • To get started consider growing Canadian winter hardy roses developed to survive our winters.  They are easy to grow, come in a range of heights and colours, and are available at a number of local nurseries and garden centres.

To increase your knowledge, consider joining our society, buying our book, or attending one of our special events. We are always available to answer your questions.

Roses can be grown in a bed dedicated to just roses (top picture), or mixed with perennials and annuals (bottom right), or in a container for an added bright spot to your garden (left). Make this the year you begin your adventure in rose gardening!

Have questions?  Please use the “Contact Us” form to forward your questions or concerns. Please note the Calgary Rose Society is a volunteer driven organization.  All questions will be answered but sometimes schedules do not allow for daily monitoring of the email account.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.
